Norma McElligott
BS H.Dip in Ed., Dip Rem., BA Counselling, MIACP

I am a qualified teacher, counsellor, psychotherapist and fully accredited member of the Irish Association of Counselling Practitioners. I work in private practice and also work with agencies such as West Cork Women Against Violence, the Juvenile Liaison Scheme, HSE, ISDA and various EAP agencies and schools. I have lectured in University College Cork on counselling skills. My postgraduate training involves work in the areas of couple counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

From my perspective, the central function of counselling is to help clients to recognise their strengths , discover with is preventing them from using their own strengths and to clarify what kind of person they want to be. Clients can become more aware of what they are capable of becoming and thus learn to promote growth and change in their own lives.

In light of the evolving COVID-19 crisis and in recognition of it's potential to adversely impact our mental health and create higher levels of stress than usual, I am committed to ensuring you can get the support you need through flexible approaches to therapy via telephone or Zoom.

Contact me on normamcelligott@ gmail.ie or 086-3225624 if you would like to discuss in confidence how therapy may have a positive impact on your life.

What can I expect from engaging in psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy offers you a safe, non-judgemental, and open space to find support, learn and practice new tools, better understand who you are, and what it is you want from your life. In working together, we will address not only the symptoms but also the underlying reason(s) these symptoms have arisen.

The effects of this can be long-lasting because as we discover and explore, you develop new and effective tools to help you cope with future challenges.

Does going to therapy mean there's something wrong with me?

Often, people think seeking out therapy means they are 'broken' and need to be 'fixed.' I strongly disagree with this. Attending therapy shows incredible strength and I look forward to supporting you on the journey ahead.

What is CBT?

CBT is a therapy designed to help you manage issues in your life by changing the way you think and then behave.

It’s most commonly used to treat anxiety and depression, but can be useful for help a wide range of both mental and physical health problems.

It aims to encourage people to become more aware of negative thoughts, and of the behavourial patterns which reinforce their "distorted" thinking.
Rather than focusing on the past CBT Therapy focus on the present using reference to the past to you understand why you may be thinking or behaving in a certain way.

You can then learn to change your unhelpful thoughts and behaviours through exploring the way you think about past, present and future life events
